Golden Milk
A 10-minute to make paleo-friendly, vegan, dairy-free, and naturally sweetened Turmeric Golden Milk recipe; an incredibly healing with calming properties easy drink.
Golden milk is a traditional Ayurvedic drink made with turmeric root (ground, too), milk (originally cow but can also be prepared to your liking with plant-based and dairy-free milk), ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper. In addition, people typically sweetened it with unrefined sugars like honey or maple syrup; often consumed as a soothing and warming drink before bedtime.
Turmeric is a spice that is commonly used in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking and is known for its bright yellow color. It contains a compound called curcumin, which is believed to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some of the potential benefits of turmeric include:
-Reducing inflammation in the body, which may help with conditions such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
-Improving brain function and possibly reducing the risk of brain diseases like Alzheimer's.
-Lowering the risk of heart disease by improving the function of the endothelium and reducing inflammation.
-Helping to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
-Assisting in the treatment of certain types of cancer by slowing down the growth of cancer cells and making chemotherapy more effective.
It's important to note that while turmeric has many potential health benefits, more research is needed to confirm its effectiveness and determine the ideal dosage. It is always best to consult with your healthcare provider before adding any new supplement or herb to your diet. Please read all ingredient lists to ensure you’re not allergic or intolerant to any ingredients.
Ingredients
1 cup of milk of your choice (cow, almond, soy, etc.)
1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
1/4 teaspoon of ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
A pinch of black pepper
Sweetener of your choice (optional)
In a small saucepan, combine the milk, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and black pepper.
Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it begins to steam.
Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to remove any lumps.
Add sweetener of your choice, if desired.
Serve warm and enjoy!
You can also blend all ingredients in a blender if you want a creamier texture. You can also add a tablespoon of coconut oil or ghee for extra richness and added health benefits. You can also use fresh ginger and turmeric root instead of powdered versions.
Enjoy!
